Nottingham's poster boy Mez has taken the grime scene by storm this week with the announcement of a new EP, Tyrone, due for release this Friday. Today, he shares its lead single, "Angles", produced by Lewi B and Sabz.
It seems Lewi was telling the truth when he recently claimed that "Wavey Lewi pops up every now and again". The song's instrumental combines pulsating 808 drums with wispy synths in a departure from his dubstep-influenced signature sound. It directly samples D Double E's legendary "Head Get Mangled" lyric, and also interpolates the chorus of Merky ACE's currently unreleased album cut "Ruff's the New Buff".
The music video, directed by JP Clear Vision, sees a purple-tinted, bally-clad Mez spitting into the mirror. interspersed with futuristic clips of planets and 3D shapes. If the rest of the EP is anything like this, he's set the bar high for other MCs in 2018.
Little is currently known about the project. Interestingly, it's listed as an independent release, despite Mez previously signing with Bluku Music and having promised his next EP would mark the comeback of Jammer's Jahmek The World imprint. Trends has been confirmed as a producer of multiple tracks. Judging by the pre-order clips, one of these is likely to be "Octopus". Meanwhile, the percussion on "Ready to Skeng" carries hints of a possible Grandmixxer production.
The Tyrone EP is expected to be released this Friday, 26 January. You can stream previews of each track on Apple Music now, and catch the "Angles" video below:
