"Me? I set a personal best and I lapped it." ("Can't Do That")

Jay0117 has impressed this year. The Bristolian barrer has been grafting nonstop: he's dropped an EP alongside Birmingham lyricist Deadly; appeared at DJ Argue's Hell In A Cell 2 clash for a memorably ferocious battle against Tommy B; cooked up a forthcoming mixtape with Sir Hiss; and has also somehow found the time to chef up a slick EP alongside Gosport producer Audio Slugs – who's had an equally colossal 2018, with an appearance at the Beat Boss 7 soundclash and a slew of production credits on the recent P Money and Little Dee EP.

On their new five-track collaborative venture, Views from the Slix, the two artists are joined by a commendable lineup of guest MCs: the West Country's Emz, Dimpson, Double, Dash Villz and Springa, and Birmingham's Deadly and Mr. Manage. The EP's title and cover are a hilarious spoof of Drake's famed LP Views [from the 6], and depict Jay sat atop the notorious Stokes Croft chicken shop Slix (where he's previously filmed multiple music videos).

"M4"—the EP's lead single, which first dropped back in June—kicks off the project, and is followed by the tonally similar "Usual" (featuring Emz). Both tracks feature icy synth arpeggios, smooth, gliding basslines, and infectious hooks. Next up is the four-man strong Bristol-to-Brum linkup "Can't Do That", which sees each spitter bring their A game over a booming production.

On the brass-based "Chit Chat", Jay reinvigorates his longstanding beef with Swindon MC and former Honda employee Grim Sickers, spitting: "Tell a donny hold that, I'll be back in a minute / Grab Grim straight out the back of his Civic". Meanwhile, Double lets rip some of the bars that we recently heard on his "Who's Hard?" freestyle for Distinxt UK. Wrapping up the EP is "Take Time", which features operatic vocal samples, a casual chorus from Springa, and an intricately crafted sixteen bars from Dash Villz.

We caught up with Jay back in May for a huge interview alongside Deadly and Dimpson. Check that out if you'd like to learn more about what he's up to, and find the two artists @_Jay0117 and @audioslugs on Twitter for more updates. Views from the Slix can be streamed in full below, and is out now via all good retailers.
