Flowdan showcases his formidable label roster on 'Welcome to SpentShell'

For the past couple of years, grime veteran and former Roll Deep star Flowdan has been devoting much of his time to launching his own record label and management company, SpentShell. Now celebrating their tenth release, following a steady stream of releases from the likes of PK, GHSTLY XXVII, and Ruby Black last year, the roster's artists have reconvened for their first compilation – the Welcome to SpentShell EP, consisting of six brand new collaborations between SpentShell artists and their peers.

Despite its diverse array of guests, the project remains thematically consistent thanks to brooding, brassy, and bass-heavy productions from Riddla ("Water", "On Sight"), Filthy Gears ("War Mode", "Rigamortis"), Masro ("Certified") and even Flowdan himself, who has recently come to the fore as a talented beat-maker ("No Days Off"). The majority of these instrumentals are hot off the press, although close followers of Filthy Gears will recognise that "War Mode" is a vocal version of "Weasel", first released in April 2018.

Flowdan and GHSTLY XXVII are a synergistic and inseparable duo on the EP, appearing on five tracks together and making up the lion's share of the project. Special guests include seasoned yardie lyricist Riko Dan, who appears twice ("On Sight", "Rigamortis"); West London's Nasty Jack, who delivers an impassioned, half-sung verse on "On Sight" in which he jokes "Only go church graveyard / To dig up mi old rusty semi"; Bloodline member Bossman Birdie, who remixes his iconic "dem dere" bars on "Certified"; and Limehouse lad Discarda, who delivers a characteristically simple yet effective verse on "War Mode". It's a strong start to 2019 for SpentShell.
