Renowned for cultivating a unique brand of introspective, intellectual grime, Hertfordshire lyricist Esskay can always be relied on to deliver tracks with honest messages, a rich lexicon, and intricate, multi-syllable rhymes. Since the release of his seven-track rap project Essence last September, the SHELLYVNNE member has been consistently pumping out grime releases; notably, a feature on J Smart's all-star rally "The Patternsphere"; a dubstep- and trance-tinged single with XP entitled "Paradox"; and an appearance on Monkstar and Sharee's "How We Do". Today, the well-versed wordsmith returns with a brand new single and video, "Why Though?", available to view below exclusively via Once Upon A Grime.
Over a Spookzville production, he draws on a multitude of references to biology, psychology, and pop culture to illustrate his mind state; articulating his troubled thoughts throughout with poetry and precision ("The denial that I'm in deep's what keeps me from flying free / And I'm teased by the irony"). The minimalistic accompanying visuals, directed and edited by Alex Frances, find him set against flickering lights; a simple, yet effective juxtaposition of light and darkness.
