2021 sees the Bristol based label Durkle Disco return for their tenth year, after decade of non-stop dance floor destroyers in a range of tempos and genres.
This year seems to be no different as their first release of 2021 sees both Riko Dan and Logan feature on the hard hitting 'Hawkeye EP'. Produced by the partnership of NothingNice and Hayz, there is a balance in sound between dubstep and grime that is so synonymous with the producers. The duo, most recognized for their work with 1Forty, bring equal parts Leeds (Hayz) and Bristol (NothingNice) on this 4 tracker.
Kicking off the EP is 'Hawkeye' with eastern Xiqin strings and an aggressive beat. The cruddy dubstep bass introduces Riko who does what Riko does best, perfectly blending yard and gruff lyrics. There is a great use of space in the track, allowing lyrics to pierce the breaks in music.
Up next is the remix, NothingNice and Hayz have employed the services of DJ Polo, who creates a different soundscape. Filling the space with up tempo kicks and replacing snares with even more darkness, giving it a more 130 feel. Both iterations of Hawkeye stand apart as excellently executed and uniquely appealing.
Track three blesses us again with the instrumental of the original mix, where we can hear in more detail the subtle nuances in the drums and the instrumentation used. It’s obviously very MC ready and I'm absolutely certain we will be hearing some versions of this in future radio sets.
Last and by no means least is 'Shell Dem' with rising star Logan on the vocal. This heavyweight track doesn't come up for air at any point, remaining deep and dark throughout. This suits Logan's vocal style perfectly as he peppers the beat with his deep set Yard, meandering from verse to chorus as though it were a freestyle.
